![]() ![]() If the enemy has a Dodge token, that’s a 50% chance to dodge (if it’s a Dodge+ token, that goes up to 75%). In practice, this can be significantly complicated by the status effect tokens that the enemy has applied to either you or themselves if you have the Blind token on your character, that’s a 50% chance to miss. By default, when you execute an attack in Darkest Dungeon II you will always hit, and then roll a damage range the game hands you up front, and then roll to apply a debuff or damage-over-time effect if that’s part of the ability. There is one massive improvement that Redhook has made to the core mechanical engine of the game: the elimination of the accuracy system, whereby you rolled a die to hit and then rolled a die for damage and every skill had modifiers to both of those things (big swingy attacks had reduced accuracy and increased damage from the ‘norms’ for each class annoying harrier attacks had improved accuracy and decreased damage, and so on) and the implementation of the token system. They’re all suitably, pleasingly unpleasant. One of the battle locations in the biome called The Foetor. Still, the man is an institution at this point (if you’ve got 10 favorite streamers, odds are at least two of them have custom subscriber notifications that he’s done as a freelance actor) and it’s good to have him back in the saddle even if they’re going to have to work a little bit harder for the second tranche of Academic ramblings. Wayne June can deliver the hell out of lines like “Reliable insight brings accurate information, after all,” but as written that still has the personality of an actual survey course syllabus rather than a crazed Lovecraftian professor driven mad by what he’s learned. There’s hundreds of voice lines of him saying ominous, sobering, or pithy statements those looking for the comfort of the franchise mainstay will find it, though the writing on his bon mots seems a bit clunkier this time around. Wayne June is back as the voice of the narration character, whose identity has changed rather than being The Ancestor from the first game, he is now styled as The Academic. This is almost an unqualified success the animations look great, the lighting doesn’t interfere with the high-contrast, heavy-inks art style, and there’s a charming paper-mache diorama feel to a bunch of the environments as you cruise through them, especially The Sprawl, a biome that represents a burning cobblestoned city. Darkest Dungeon II is a game that can’t be in two dimensions thanks to the addition of the stagecoach mechanic (reasonable disagreements can be had with regards to the wisdom of that mechanic itself), and so it had to taken the hand-drawn indie comics look of the first title and translate it into a world with meshes and a lighting engine and so on. First, the good things: despite the game moving to 3D, the visual feel of the franchise remains intact and has arguably thrived. We’ll get to what I mean precisely by that in a bit. There will eventually be 5 different run types or game modes of which Denial is the first and most basic more importantly, I’ve decided we’re signing everything under the group penname of the “Rum Captives.” It has the now-expected aesthetic down pat, and it has the trademark random number generation factor that swings events in each run between annoying and punishing in spades…but it is somewhat too easy, while also being too overdetermined. ![]() While the game is in a very early stage of public development - all the judgments and opinions in this piece should be taken with that in mind - it’s in something of a different place than (I at least recall) Darkest Dungeon being when it launched. Darkest Dungeon II is in Early Access now (on the Epic Game Store for a year before wider release, so on and so forth, you know the deal by now). It’s time, once again, to play a game that hates you, and takes pride in hating you.

Story structure veers away from the single cases featured in previous games in the series. Rigorous detective work and an affinity for the unique Sherlockian atmosphere do everything but put a deerstalker on your head and a magnifying glass in your hand. Sherlock Holmes: Crimes & Punishments takes the series to a new level when it comes to game mechanics, storytelling, and visuals. It’s time for Marisol to prove her worth, or her people could fall into chaos while her best friend loses his life. Marisol fears this case too might be far more personal than she could’ve imagined. In her last case, Mannix broke her heart and ruined her case, and Marisol isn’t sure which is worse. Just when things couldn’t get worse, Marisol’s ex-boyfriend-turned-nemesis, Mannix, starts leaving sinister clues for her. “When you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth.” The stakes just got higher than political intrigue. When Marisol discovers her handsome best friend, Roan, is missing, she realizes Roan may be the killer’s next target. Is one of her own people really involved, or is this all a ploy to kick Marisol’s mother off the shifter throne? “There is nothing more deceptive than an obvious fact.” After all, as a half-blood jaguar shifter, Marisol is uniquely qualified to solve this murder-since every scrap of evidence points toward the culprit being a fellow jaguar shifter. What’s more Holmesian than a grisly murder? The Conclave, an underground organization of detectives solving supernatural cases, is giving her just one chance to catch a killer and join them. Seventeen-year-old Marisol Holmes wants to live up to the family legacy after all, she is the great-great-great granddaughter of Sherlock Holmes. However, that doesn’t diminish the fun! If you like Sherlock Holmes: Consulting Detective, then I recommend… A Study in Shifters (The Adventures of Marisol Holmes Book 1) I was deluded for a while, thinking the killer was someone else than he turned up being, but once I followed the majority of the clues and put all the different stories together, only one killer really made sense.Īs a downside, I didn’t beat Holmes on my playthrough – I’m always more interested in solving the entire mystery, even the secondary questions, rather than just jump the shark to get to a quick answer, like Holmes often does – and I think in general it will be very hard to beat Holmes on this one. The case is also slightly more difficult than the first one, and there were again some red herrings that could potentially put you on the wrong track. First, it relies on some historical tidbits, which I liked a lot, and secondly, it is in part a combination of two cases in one – but don’t let yourself get fooled by that. I enjoyed the second case more than the first for two simple reasons. Armstead is one of the remaining survivors – is his death linked to the Tontine? Or was he murdered for other nefarious reasons? The last person alive out of all the participants in the Tontine, wins the grand prize. The Tontine is a lottery of sorts, and was set up in 1815 to aid the veterans of the Battle of Waterloo, Wellington’s victory over Napoleon. In this second case, General Armstead, one of the six surviving Waterloo Tontine ticket holders has been murdered. The second case is called The Tin Soldier. I previously reviewed the first case in this collection: The Munitions Magnate. The goal is supposedly to beat Holmes – solve the mystery with fewer clues than he does – but the real fun is if you follow all the clues, and get a picture of the entire mystery, including the parts Holmes doesn’t touch upon. It takes place in Victorian London (the 1880s-1890s) and you are trying to solve mysteries alongside Sherlock Holmes and his faithful companion, Dr. Sherlock Holmes: Consulting Detective is a solo or co-op board game that is ideally played by 1-4 players. ![]() JanuBoard Game Review: Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective: Case 2: The Tin Soldier ![]() The photos and experiences of ESCAPE are unbelievable. For all the control the video game gives Patrick, he’s a kid who has no control. Strip away the tawdry B-movie and you have a story about a son so desperate to connect to a father he never knew that he had to invent him in a game and then try to use him as a moral compass. But when you put it all out there, the twist doesnt really elevate the films quality, just its lunacy. Writer-director Steven Knight picked the right medium for Patrick because it tells us about Patrick’s means of expression.Īnd that means of expression is surprisingly sad. Serenity is a movie thats truly about the journey, not the destination. Serenity isn’t meant to be a treatise on video games as much as it’s using the medium of video games to express a thematic point similar to how Inception isn’t about dream logic as much as using dreams to tell a story with clearly defined rules. To see Baker wrestle with the moral choice-do you kill an evil man if it means protecting someone you love-is a reflection of Patrick’s choice. In a novel, there’s only one choice and only one path. The player has choice, but the avatar must follow the player’s decision. ![]() Video games present the fascinating paradox of choice and compulsion. But a novel wouldn’t quite fit in a story about choice. And yet that leap ends up giving far more weight to the overall story.Īnd yet I’m inclined to believe that if the twist had been Patrick’s writing a novel, audiences would be more willing to accept the twist. New film Serenity has one of the most ludicrous twists in film history. ![]() It’s a major leap to bridge the story of a fisherman who compulsively needs to fish to a story about that man’s son who wants to murder his abusive stepdad. The question we have to look at with Serenity’s twist is “Does it work?” and I believe that, for the most part, it does. Any reviewer of Serenity is likely to struggle not to spoil its humongous plot twist. Dill is based on John Mason, Patrick's actual father who died in Iraq in 2006. That being said, it’s not enough to simply shock the audience. In the final moments of the movie, it becomes clear that Dill is trapped in a video game that has been programmed by his real-life son, Patrick (Rafael Sayegh). Serenity does just that when it reveals what looked liked a sultry thriller of murder, sex, and deceit turned out to be a traumatized teenager’s video game. In an age where movies are pre-sold within an inch of their lives, studios live or die on formulaic storytelling, and trailers give away the majority of the plot, it’s genuinely thrilling that a film can come out and surprise its audience. "No one dies in the game," Reid tells Baker. As I said in my review, Serenity is not the film you’re expecting. Naturally, Baker undergoes a crisis of identity and free will, but decides to obey his son anyway and go through with killing the abusive husband, despite the game's various NPCs trying to thwart him - including at one point his first mate Duke ( Djimon Hounsou) hiring a group of gangsters to break the husband's hands so he can't fish. But Baker retains all those memories of his son and his time in the war, and for some reason, can hear his son as Patrick inputs the code that changes a mundane fishing game into a murder scenario. Baker is based on his father, who had died in the Iraq War. Is he an alien? A prophet? No, Reid is literally the "rules" of a video game.īaker Dill is not a real person, but a character in a fishing video game that his son has been tampering with to play out his fantasies of killing a digital version of his abusive step-father. ![]() He continues to babble, revealing that he knows all about Baker's obsession with the tuna called "Justice" and his intention to kill the man abusing his ex-wife. But he lets something slip as Baker tries to push him out of his house: "I am the rules," Reid says. Reid introduces himself as a representative of a fishing company that wants to give Baker a fish tracker free of charge. But that premise is completely disrupted when Reid Miller finally catches up with Baker. Serenity appears to be planting the seeds for a supernatural twist.
